Dashakam VI

Shloka: 1
He eesha! tava evam gatasya------------------------ O Lord! “You”, who had taken or assumed in this manner,
Chaturdasha-jaganmayataam--------------------------the form of the 14 worlds
Paadatalam vadanti paataalam------------------------- the soles of the feet are said to be “patala”
He Deva! Te Paadordhvadesham api------------O Effulgent One! (Brilliant, splendour) The upper region of “Your” feet, too
(Vadanti) Rasaatalam--------------------------------------are said to be “Rasatala”
He Adbhutaatman! -----------------------------------------O Lord, of wondrous form!
Te Gulphadvayam khalu (vadanti) Mahaatalam-------------“Your” two ankles are, indeed, said to be “Mahatala”
 From the above, it is understood that out of the 14 worlds, ‘Patala’ is the lowest and that      corresponds with the lowermost portion of the Cosmic body.

He Anga! Chakrapaane-------------------------------------------O Lord! The wielder of the Discus! (One who handles the Chakra with skill and easily)
Atho tava janghe Talaatalam cha----------------------------- Then “Your” shanks (a part from the knee to the ankle) are ‘Talatala’ and
Jaanoo Sutalam---------------------------------------------------“Your” knees are ‘Sutala’
Kincha ooru-bhaaga-yugalam----------------------------further, two parts of “Your” thigh region (the lower part of the thighs and waist region)
Vitalaatale dve----------------------------------------------------are the two worlds ‘Vitala’ and ‘Atala’ respectively
Jaghanam Kshoneetalam naabhihi ambaram---------------“Your” hip is the Earth, navel is the Sky
Vakshah shakranilayah cha---------------------------------and “Your” chest ‘Swarga’, the abode of Indra

Tava Greevaa mahah mukham janah cha--------------------“Your” neck is ‘Maharloka’ and face ‘Janaloka’
Phalaam tu tapah shirah tava---------------------------------------“Your” forehead ‘Tapoloka’ the head of “yours”
Samastamayasya satyam-------------------------------------the One who are everything is ‘Satyaloka’
He Bhagavan----------------------------------------------------O Lord with 6 attributes
Jaganmayatano-------------------------------------------------in whose form, the whole Universe is embodied
Namah te nibaddha-vapushe------------------------------- Prostrations to “You” whose form is defined
Anyaih api ----------------------------------------------------- as being made up of all other things
Jagadaashritaih evam-----------------------------------------in this Universe, in this manner
Neck region--------------------------------------------- MaharlokaFace region-----------------------------------------------JanalokaForehead------------------------------------------------- TapalokaCrown of the head-------------------------------------- Satyaloka

He Eeshvara! Vishvakanda! ----------------------------------- O Lord who are the root cause of the Universe
Tvadbrahma-randhrapadam Chandaamsi -------------------“Your” Brahmarandhara, aperture on crown is the Vedas
He Keshava! -------------------------------------------------O Keshava, one with luxuriant hair! Slayer of Kesi!
Tava Keshapaashaah ghanaah-----------------------------------“Your” ornamented hair are the dark clouds
Ullaasi-chilli-yugalam------------------------------------------------“Your” delightful pair of eyebrows
Geham Druhinasya--------------------------------------------------are the abode of Brahma
Pakshmaani raatri divasau------------------------------------------“Your” eye-lashes are night and day
Cha Netre savitaa------------------------------------------------------and “Your” eyes are the sun
The followings are interpreted like:
1. Kanda means root or bulb, which is a common medium of propagation of plants. Hence the fact that the Lord is the “root” cause for the creation, sustenance and growth of the Universe is what is meant in this shloka.
2. Vishvakanda also means one who bestows happiness to all devotees in the world. Eeshvara means, “Being the embodiment of all divine faculties, He protects, guides and regulates the whole Universe, which His own creation”.
1. Kesam means hair and keshava is one who has a beautiful hair
2. Keshava--Kah=Brahma+Aha=Vishnu+Eesha= Shiva, Keshah= the Trinity. One who is superior to Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva
3. One who killed the demon Kesi

Tava Kataaksha mokshah-----------------------------The casting of “Your” side-long glances
Nisheshavishvarachanaa------------------------------is the act of creation of the whole Universe
Karnau dishah--------------------------------------------“Your” ears are the directions
Dve naasike ashviyugalam--------------------------two nostrils, the two Aswini-devas, Naasatya and Dasra
Adharottaroshthau lobhatrape cha------------------lower and upper lips greed and modesty
Radanaah taaraaganaah cha---------------------------teeth the galaxy of stars and
Damshtraa shamanah cha------------------------------ the molars Yama, the God of death
“Your” side-long glance constitutes the creation of the 14 worlds. Hence, it is needless to say that,

Shvasitam Sameerah Jihvaa Jalam------------------------“Your” breath the wind, “Your” tongue water
Vachanam  Shakuntapangktihi-----------------------------“Your” speech an array of birds
Svaraganaah siddhaadayah---------------------------“Your” tunes (Shadja and other swaras) siddhas etc
Mukharandhram aginihi bhujaah devaa-----------------“Your” mouth the God of Fire, arms the Devas, and
Stanayugam dharma devah------------------------------------“Your” twin breasts the God of Dharma
“Your” bewitching sweet smile is ‘Maya’ which infatuates all beings.

“Your” tunes of music Shadja (Sa), Rishabha (Ri), Gandhara (Ga), Madhyama (Ma), Panchama (Pa), Dhaivata (Dha), and Nishada (Ni)-------------------------the divine artists like Siddhas, Charanas and Gandharvas
“Your” Mouth------------------------Fire

Iha Prshtam tu adharmah------------------ The back of “Your” Cosmic Form is unrighteousness ( this implies that unrighteousness should be left behind or abandoned)
Manah sudhaamshuh------------------------and “Your” mind the Moon
He Ambujaaksha! Hrdayaambujam-----------O Lotus-eyed Lord! “Your” Lotus heart
Avyaktam eva-----------------------------------------------is the Unmanifest (Un differentiated nature) with the three Gunas in equilibrium
Kukshih Samudranivahaah----------------“Your” abdomen the oceans
Vasanam tu sandhye---------------------------“Your” garments are the two Sandhyaas—dawn and the dusk
Shephah asau prajaapatih-------------------“your” generative organ Prajaapati, the God of procreation
Vrshanau cha mitrah--------------------------and “Your” testicles are God Mitra

Te Shroneesthalam mrgaganaah-----------------------the back side of “Your” waist is the animal world
Padayoha nakhaah-----------------------------------------“Your” toe nails are
Hastayushtra Saindhava-mukhaah----------------------- animals like elephants, camels and horses
Gamanam tu kaalah---------------------------------------- “Your” movement is Time
Te Vadanaabjabaahu-chaarooru-yugamacharanam vipraadi varna bhavanam---------and “Your” lotus-face, arms, the two beautiful thighs and feet are the sources of the four varnas or divisions, ( Your face-----Brahmanas, Your arms------kshatriyas, Your thighs--------Vaisyas, Your feet---- Shudras )

Te Kriyaah Samsaara chakram---------------------------“Your” activity is the repetitive cycle of births and deaths
Veeryam Mahaasuraganah--------------------------“Your” prowess (bravery,courage) is the host of great Asuras
Asthikulaani shailaah-----------------------------------“Your” bones are the mountain ranges
Naadyaah Saritsamudayah-----------------------------“Your” blood vessels are the river systems
Rame taravah cha---------------------------------------- and “Your” hair the trees
He eesha! Idam Vapuh---------------------------------O All –Powerful Lord! May “Your” body, which is
 Anirvachaneeyam jeeyaat------------------------------unique and indescribable, shine for ever within me
The cycle of births and deaths is known as “Samsara- Chakra”. O Lord! All Your activities results only in this cycle. As “You” wear the discus of births and deaths also, “You” are referred to as ‘Chakra-dhara’.
It is said in Bhagavatam, the seven constituent ingredients of the Cosmic body i.e., chyle (milky bodily fluid consisting of lymph and emulsified fats), blood, flesh, fat, bone, marrow and semen represent the chchandas or metres namely, Gayatri, Ushnik, Anushtup, Bhrihati, Pankti,Trishtup and Jagathi and the beard represents streak of lightning

Smaraneeyam Karmbhaajaam-------------------------------is worthy of remembrance, for the Karma Yogi
Karmaavasaana-samaye ahuh----------------------------at the conclusion of worship, Great people say
He vaataalayaadhipa---------------------------------------O Lord of Guruvayoor
Namah astu te----------------------------------------------salutations to “You”
Antaraatmavapushe-----------who are the in-dweller (to be located or implanted) of that Cosmic form
Tasya vimalaatmane --------------------------------------and who are made of pure Sattva-guna
Nirundhi rogaan----------------------------------------------deign to eradicate all ailments
Viraat means Giant or Huge
Other meanings of Viraat :
Viraat-purusha (Viraat-purusha).
First incarnation of Brahma;Cosmic Divinity;
Lord in His form as the physical manifested cosmos.

Viraat-rupa (Virat-roopa). Universal Form, Supreme Being.

Viraat-swarupa (Viraat-svaroopa).
The Lord in His form as manifested universe; the cosmic form of God
